What a glorious getaway to the Outer Banks this week...
We had a few chilly days, but they were beautiful and restful...
R & R with Redbox...
Great place to read the Word...
Oh my goodness, this was a little unnerving... James stepped on a Prickly Pear Cactus - ouch!
Tuesday morning we headed to play putt-putt golf...
Chillin' with Blackbeard...
Tallying our scores... Tony beat me by one.... fun time...
Family bumper car fun...
It was all giggles...
On Wednesday, we did a little sight-seeing...
Wall of aviators... Victoria was searching for Amelia Earhardt... and finally found her...
These brothers "taught us to fly"...
Great place for oysters, crab and shrimp... We shared crab legs and shrimp... and it was glorious.... This was a favorite "special treat" of ours growing up... The last time I remember being there I believe I was in high school. Dad took just me for some shrimp cocktail... treasured memory... enjoyed making memories with our kids this week....
Can we say (as Joshua often does), "Delicious!"
We've always got to have at least one silly pose...
James the builder also loves burying things... like himself...
Joshua was nonstop talk the hours we were out at the beach on Wednesday (our one beautiful day in the 70's)... he talked to the waves, to the birds, to his siblings... very entertaining, ha!
James did this all on his own! Fabulous.
Tony took a break from reading in the rays and the kids had a blast chasing him around the surf...
Victoria and I catching some rays...
These feet belong to the cutest kids on the planet (if I do say so myself ;-)...
Love the beach... and basically had it to ourselves since it's still the off season!
Thursday morning, James went with me on my jog (halfway through my couch to 5K... and enjoying it, especially with my little running partners)...
Tony took Joshua and Victoria with him on his jog... Then we all headed to a favorite childhood pizzeria of my family's:
Jana and Angela will be my running buddies tomorrow!
After lunch, we headed over to Jockey's Ridge...
Had to pose in front of the hang glider... of course the kids were wishing we were headed to hang gliding school... could you imagine this crew hang gliding?!.
Next time we come we'll have to visit Roanoke Island and the Lost Colony...
1500 - Around the turn of the century Native Americans had seasonal camps near Jockey's Ridge...
1585 - First attempt by English to colonize Roanoke Island...
1607 - Jamestown colony founded...
1620 - Plymouth colony founded...
1663 - North Carolina becomes a colony...
1718- Blackbeard the pirate is killed...
1838 - First Nags Head Hotel built...
And so on...
Pre-dune hike...
Climbing up the dune...
It was so windy, low 50's and our feet were cold in the sand - but it was a blast! Our kids seemed not to notice...
The Albemarle Sound behind this posing crew...
What goes up must come down... ha.
Our chilly arrival to the beach on Monday... but still tons of fun! :-)
Climbing Jockey's Ridge - largest sand dune on the east coast...
