Saturday was James' first Upward Soccer game of the season. He was so excited, I heard him get up and dressed a little before 6 AM! I had slept on the sofa but eventually moved into the guest room as the sound of movement upstairs grew in volume. Elementary aged children don't seem to grasp the concept of "sleeping in on Saturdays".... ha.
After oatmeal and boiled eggs, we loaded up the van and headed to the soccer field. The girls and I spread out a blanket to watch, while Tony huddled in the van to watch quarantined with a 100.2 degree fever...
As we descended on the field to find his team, he was busy talking about the colors of the Ukrainian flag ("blue and yellow, momma") and later, his slide kicks... The girls played with dolls and coloring books not really interested in watching their brother play, just wanting to provide moral support and be social... do I have girlie girls or what?!. The boys did a great job playing. Soccer is so fun to watch. It is especially fun to see James playing a sport he is slightly more familiar with...
Each player received a star reflecting some of the strengths of their game... defense, leadership, etc... James received a star for Christlikeness... There was an incident when a player on the opposing team went down after a play, James was quick to go and help him up... My sweet boy.
When all was said and done, the team huddled up with their coaches for a closing chant and bid farewell until the next practice...
